National Sports Day is celebrated annually on 29th August, to emphasize the importance of sports and physical activities and to honor Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy in Indian hockey.

National Reading Month 2023

 

National Reading Month Celebration

 19th June -18th July 2023

The P N Panicker Foundation and P N Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra have been observing the Reading Day, Reading Week, and Reading Month Celebrations since 19th June, 1996, the first annual remembrance day of Shri P N Panicker, the father of Library and Literacy Movement in Kerala.
Started as a Reading Day Celebration on 19th June, 1996, by the Govt. of Kerala along with P.N. Panicker Foundation it has become a mass movement to promote the culture of reading so as to inculcate the habit of reading and promote book mindedness among school children, youth as well as the underprivileged population of the country.
The Government of Kerala and the Government of India through NITI Aayog has entrusted the responsibility of observing National Reading/ Digital Reading Month Celebrations to P N Panicker Foundation and P N Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra.
Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, came down to Kerala and launched the 22nd National Reading/ Digital Reading Month Celebrations on 19th June, 2017 at Kochi. The Prime Minister gave a clarion call to propagate the message of Vayichu Valaruka (Read and Grow) to 300 million Indian citizens by 2022 when the country celebrate its 75th year of independence. The Prime Minister directed P.N. Panicker Foundation to promote digital reading also so as to use digital technology in all educational institutions of the country.
The Government of Kerala and the Government of India through NITI Aayog has entrusted the responsibility of observing National Reading/ Digital Reading Month Celebrations to P N Panicker Foundation and P N Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra.
The 28th P N Panicker National Reading Day/ Digital Reading Month Celebrations 2023 are being celebrated as previous years in collaboration with Govt. of India, Ministry of Education, NITI Aayog, National Digitial Library of India (NDLI), Govt. of Kerala, P.N. Panicker Foundation, P.N. Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra and various other stakeholders from 19th June to 18th July, 2023.

Each year, on 23 April, celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the scope of books - a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures. On this occasion, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers and libraries, select the World Book Capital for a year to maintain, through its own initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebrations.

Reading Day Pledge

Today I stand and pledge with full faith of my ability to grow through

reading and discussions. I pledge to promote the development of

my country, Bharat, through judicious reading of books, as well as

digital reading, and through right action. I shall read books and

practice digital reading, for knowledge as well as technological

empowerment. I shall shine the light of knowledge gained, to solve

the problems I face as well the challenges that affect my country.

I realize that today we face multiple challenges, be it corruption,

substance abuse, or environmental problems. I shall make reading

a habit and and be a solution to these challenges. I shall ensure best

compliance to the legal framework of my country and shall strive

for a secure and secular atmosphere. I shall strive to raise high, the

value of knowledge, and the pride of my country with my thoughts,

words and deeds.

Department of School Education and Literacy has launched a National Mission for foundational literacy and Numeracy called NIPUN Bharat on 5th July 2021. The mission aims to cover the learning needs of children from age group of 3 to 9 years. As established by various international researches, foundational learning is the basis of all future learning for a child. Not achieving basic foundational skills of being able to read with comprehension, writing and doing basic mathematics operations, leaves the child unprepared for the complexities of the curriculum beyond grade 3.Recognizing the importance of early learning, the National Education Policy 2020 emphasises that the highest priority must be to achieve universal foundational literacy and numeracy in primary schools. Further, it states that, the rest of this Policy will be largely irrelevant for a large portion of our students if this most basic learning (i.e.,reading, writing, and arithmetic at the foundational level) is not first achieved.Various studies of learning profiles in India, including National Achievement Survey(NAS), have pointed out that many children are not able to read a simple grade appropriate passage. But, the curriculum and associated textbooks are designed with the expectation that children have acquired grade-level skills and can progress onwards. It is in this context, D/o School Education and Literacy is initiating a----

                                       so that each child learns to read and thereafter,can read to learn.
